This is an extremely diverse region, geographically, culturally and socio-economically. It covers the Central Business District, harbour side mansions, surf beaches, industrial areas, medium density suburbs and high-rise public housing estates.
A large proportion of the population was born overseas and therefore many interesting cultural and culinary opportunities exist scattered throughout the region. There are over thirty nationalities represented in this region.
It contains the wealthiest post code areas in Sydney as well as Waterloo which is one of the most disadvantaged post code areas.
Within these localities there is an increasing problem with housing issues, particularly in the poorer areas. Higher housing costs are leading to increased rents which is making it harder for welfare recipients and the working poor. This in turn suggests that there is a danger of losing much of the diversity of the area as the disadvantaged have to leave for more affordable housing in more remote areas of the city.
There is a large variety of industries located within this region, both large and small, and covering a range of employment areas.
